By the late 60’s all previous fashion statements were being thrown out the window because women were beginning to wear shorter and tighter clothing, they were no longer afraid to flaunt their stuff. “It’s almost like the 1950s bottled everyone up so much that the late 1960s exploded like an old pressure cooker.” (Phillips 2014) The fantasy and imagination in women's fashion was reaching new heights. London was the centre of the fashion world, the British invasion wasn’t just The Beatles shaking the music world but it was changing aspects in all areas of life especially clothing. The more skin shown the better and accessories were becoming a must have including gloves, hats and scarfs were all very popular.
Icon of the Late 60s - Jane Birkin
Jane Birkin was a fashion icon for girls around the world, with a simple and revealing style. Jane was loved for her beautiful voice and acting skills but also for her popular simple but edgy look. Jane was often seen in short shift dresses with a three quarter sleeve. Her outfits were always edgy showing off more skin than most other woman at the time. Jane now has a handbag named after her, ‘The Birkin Bag’, in her honor although she is often seen holding a picnic basket which she used as a handbag. Jane became a bigger icon in the 70s but still remains a much loved and appreciated icon of the late 60s.
